This policy applies to the Wheee rider app and website. It is the same text shown inside the app under Account → Privacy Policy.
When you register for an account, we collect:
Messages you send through in-app ride chat and support tickets are stored on our servers. Our support staff can read them in order to help you. Support messages (not ride chat with your driver) are also delivered to our support team through Telegram, as described in section 6. We do not use your messages to train artificial intelligence models.
If you choose to add emergency contacts, we store the name, phone number and relationship you provide. Please only add people who are comfortable with you sharing their details. You can remove them at any time in the app.
We use your information to:
When a driver is assigned to your ride, they see your full name, your rating, your pickup and drop-off locations, your pickup time, the number of passengers, any special requirements you noted, and the fare.
Your driver is not given your phone number. Contact happens through in-app ride chat instead.
If you use the "Share trip" feature, we create a link that anyone holding it can open without logging in. That person can see your ride status, your pickup and drop-off addresses, your driver's first name, rating and live location, and the estimated arrival time.
The link expires 12 hours after your pickup time, and location details stop being shown once the ride ends. If you want to end sharing sooner, tap Stop sharing on the ride. Only share it with people you trust.
We share your information with:
We do not sell your personal information.
Wheee operates in New Zealand, but some of the services we rely on process information overseas, principally in the United States. Under Information Privacy Principle 12 of the Privacy Act 2020 we disclose these to you:
We use these providers on the basis that they are subject to privacy safeguards comparable to those in the Privacy Act 2020.
We implement appropriate security measures to protect your personal information, including:
Some information is deleted automatically on a set schedule:
Other records — including your bookings, pickup and drop-off locations, chat and support history, and payment records — are retained for as long as your account is open, and afterwards where we need them for legal, tax or dispute-resolution purposes. New Zealand tax law requires financial records to be kept for seven years.
Payment records include the payment attempt records described in section 1.
We are in the process of formalising specific retention periods for each type of information, and will update this policy when they are set.
You can delete your account from within the app. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. It cannot be completed while you have an active or upcoming ride.
When you delete your account we remove or anonymise your name, email address, phone number, date of birth, saved places, emergency contacts, saved cards and login sessions, and the content of your messages.
Copies of support messages already delivered to our support team's Telegram group (section 6) are not removed automatically when you delete your account. You can ask us to remove them, as described in section 10.
We retain a record of your bookings and payments in anonymised form — no longer linked to your name or contact details — because we are legally required to keep financial records.
After you delete your account, the references in those payment records that link them to your account and card (your Wheee account reference, our payment provider's customer and card references, and the hashed card identifier) are permanently removed, normally within a few days and always within 30 days. The amount, date, outcome and the card's brand, type, issuing country and wallet stay with the financial record.
Under New Zealand's Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to:
To exercise any of these, contact our Privacy Officer using the details in section 13.
Our services are not intended for people under 18 years of age, and accounts require a date of birth confirming you are 18 or over. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
